The planning has started

The planning of the conference has now started properly, and we are in the midst of structuring the planning process; a reference group is being set up with representatives from the Nordic countries, various venues are being considered and the call for papers is being structured (early tip: the deadline will most likely be in late May or early June).

But what is foremost on our minds is to set a date for the conference.
Having discussed various aspects, we see mid or late November, or possibly the first week of December as the most feasible options. Why? Earlier in the autumn is just too close to last year’s conference, and the first half of the autumn is already filled with other conferences (the SDN conference as well as NordiCHI). Later than early December is too close to Christmas and early spring collides with the end and start of new semesters for Swedish students.

Given the time-frame, when would you like the conference to be held? Are there any national holidays or other events which might collide with the Nordic SDC (we are aware of Thanksgiving in the US during the suggested timeframe)? And would you prefer a two or three-day conference? Please comment below or on twitter using the hashtag #NordicSDC!

  1. Hey!

I really don't want to have your job now! ..planning the second conference after the great experience and success of the first one is quite a task. :) I guess there are already high expectations on the second one now?!

However, I really liked the format of the previous conference. I think it is really useful to divide between business (basics and cases) and academia (research). Though I might add that I would prefer to highlight the crossover day as a chance where service designers (and businesses interested in service design) can exchange and learn from each other and from academia. Therefore, we need to ensure that the format (eg workshops) and content are really relevant and useful to this group. Maybe we could improve a little bit here - especially regarding the knowledge transfer from academia to business/agencies.

Regarding the dates, I guess late November as you proposed is fine. The only date to consider I have in mind is Dec. 6th (St. Nicholas' Day). Also doing the conference from Tuesday to Thursday was fine for me.

A few more thoughts on the conference, if this is of interest for you:

There are some great articles online now from the first conference. However, beside online publishing, I would love to get a printed version of the conference proceedings as well. But maybe that's just me who likes old-fashioned printed books.. ;)

I just took a look at the films from the first conference. This is also a brilliant ressource! Though it would be awesome to have them online earlier. Or maybe you could even arrange live broadcasting? For the second day, it would be nice to get a video summary of the different workshops. Maybe you could set up a student project for this?

The social aspect of the Oslo conference was incredible! Please keep the long breaks and some kind of co-created conference dinner. Although this will be hard if you'll attract more people this year!

Well, this was my wish-list. Looking forward to visit Linköping!
